“Women’s Day” was established at the Second International Conference of Women Socialists on March 8, 1910 in Copenhagen, at the initiative of Germany’s Clara Cetkin, the leader of the women’s labor movement. The day commemorates the demonstrations of American workers in Chicago in 1909 and the New York march of more than 15,000 women a year earlier, demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. Women’s Day was first celebrated in 1911 in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Denmark, and more than a million women and men attended those rallies that required women to vote in elections, to allow them to hold public positions, to have the right to work and vocational education. It began to be celebrated in Serbia in 1914.
