In the framework of the project “For more women in decision-making”, implemented by the Belgrade Fund for Political Excellence in cooperation with the Equality Relief Commissioner, and with the financial support of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, on Saturday, February 23, the BFPE project team visited Nis. On this occasion, a meeting was held in the hall of the City Assembly with representatives of local self-government and local politicians.
They discussed examples of good practices in organizing women in politics, the importance of women’s participation in local self-government bodies and the role of local gender equality mechanisms, as well as the current state and future steps for the promotion of gender equality in Niš. Following the introductory address, Višnja Baćanović, Women’s Platform for Development of Serbia, spoke on the significance of gender equality at the local level and the implications of regulations for local self-government Svetlana Stefanović, coordinator of the program, the Belgrade Fund for Political Excellence and the heads of the Nisava Administrative District Dragana Sotirovski.
Gender Equality in Local Government Units was the presentation by Bogdan Banjac, Advisor to the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, the Republic of Serbia, and Višnja Baćanović, Women’s Platform for Development of Serbia, spoke about the Gender perspective in the work of the working bodies in municipalities / towns and the role of gender equality mechanisms. In the framework of the discussion “Women in Politics – First-hand Experiences”, led by Svetlana Stefanovic, coordinator of the program of the Belgrade Fund for Political Excellence, was also discussed by Adriana Anastasov, President of the Municipal Assembly of Palilula in Niš and councillor form Nis Jelena Zarić Kovacevic.
