Aleksandar Gaun, deputy president of the Union of Jewish Municipalities of Serbia, spoke about the suffering of the Jews, who, besides captured members of the Partisan and Ravnogorski movement, were the most numerous among the inmates. “No camp should ever be forgotten or moved from the historical scene, as an eternal warning of the evil that has overtaken Europe, and which, if these memories are not nurtured and remembered, can quickly and effectively revive,” Gaun said.
In the former Nazi Concentration Camp at the Red Cross, based on the archive material processed at the National Museum in Nis, during the Second World War, about 30,000 citizens passed, of which at least 12,000 were killed at the location of Bubanj. Many detainees were transferred to the Sajmište camp or other death camps throughout Europe. This is evidenced by the exhibit in the memorial complex of the former Red Cross.
